The AC-130H/U Gunship, a type of aircraft, is solely owned by the United States Air Force

The principal functions of the AC-130H Spectre and AC-130U Spooky are armed reconnaissance, air interdiction, and close air support. Missions involving close air support consist of soldiers in contact, convoy escоrt, and point air defense. Targets of opportunity or predetermined targets are the targets of air interdiction missions, which consist of armed overwatch and reconnaissance mission sets.

Situated at night and in inclement weather, these heavily armed aircraft are equipped with sophisticated sensor, navigation, and fire control systems that are integrated with side-firing weapons. This enables them to deliver surgical ordnance or achieve area saturation during prolonged loiter periods. Radar, an infrared sensor, and a television sensor comprise the sensor suite. The gunship is capable of visually or electronically identifying allied ground forces and targets by means of these sensors.

An intimidating assortment of armaments equips the AC-130, including a 105 mm cannоn and 25 or 40 mm gatling gu𝚗s.

The AC-130U utilizes a synthetic aperture strike radar system to detect and identify targets at great distances and in adverse weather conditions. The navigational apparatus of the AC-130 consists of global positioning systems and inertial navigation systems. Both AC-130s are equipped with cutting-edge technologies and are capable of simultaneously attacking two targets.

The Spooky (U-model) represents the C-130 gunship’s third iteration. Since the AC-47, the first operational gunship, all gunships have evolved.

Combat with the AC-130 gunship dates back to the Vietnam Wаr. In addition to destroying over 10,000 vehicles, gunships were credited with numerous close air support missions that saved lives. AC-130s suppressed hоstile air defense systems and attacked ground forces during Operation Urgent Fury in Grenada in 1983, thereby facilitating the airdrop and air landing of friendly forces at Point Salines Airfield. For the mission, the AC-130 aircrew was awarded the Lt. Gen. William H. Tunner Award.

Additionally, throughout Operation Just Cause in Panama in 1989, AC-130s played a pivotal role in the destruction of numerous command and control facilities and the Panamanian Defense Force Headquarters. The Tunner Award and the Mackay Trophy for the most meritorious flight of the year were bestowed upon aircrews in recognition of their endeavors.

AC-130s furnished ground forces with close air support and force protection (air base defense) throughout Operation Desert Storm. Gunships were additionally deployed in Somalia to support United Nations ground forces through close air assistance during operations Continue Hope and United Shield. In addition, gunships were crucial in providing support for the NATO mission in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Air interdiction was provided by the AC-130H against strategic targets in the Sarajevo region.

Combat air support for U.S. and allied ground personnel during the evacuation of American noncombatants in Albania and Liberia in 1997 necessitated the diversion of gunships from Italy. The 1998 expansion of U.S. forces to persuade Iraq to comply with U.N. weapons inspections also included AC-130s. AC-130U gunships have more recently provided support to Operation Iraqi Freedom/New Dawn, whereas both aircraft have been utilized to aid in the execution of Operation Enduring Freedom. In addition, AFSOC gunships have been instrumental in the most recent upheavals throughout the Middle East. Gunships furnish direct support, interdiction, and armed reconnaissance to ground forces engaged in combat with hоstile forces.
