Close-up of the Chinese Navy’s Type 726 LCAC air cushion landing ship

Air-cushioned landing craft of the Type 726 LCAC (NATO reporting nаme Yuyi class) variety are utilized by the People’s Liberation Army Navy. It is believed that the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) operates six Yuyi-class LCACs, the first of which (3320) was spotted at the end of 2007. It is hypothesized that the vessels were delivered in two distinct orders, with the initial three LCACs purportedly equipped with Ukrainian UGT 6000 engines and the subsequent models employing QC-70 gas turbines manufactured in-house. The well deck of the Yuzhao-class landing platform dock (LPD) and Yushen-class landing helicopter dock (LHD) has the capacity to accommodate a maximum of four Yuyi-class LCACs.

The Type 726 LCAC is larger than the operational LCACs of the United States but smaller than the Zubr-class LCAC; it is limited to transporting either a single main bаttle tank (e.g., Type 96) or four armored vehicles.

A number of technical issues with the initial variant, the Type 726, caused a temporary halt to production of the class. As a consequence, the projection capabilities of the four Type 071 LPDs were restricted to exclusively landing craft, amphibious IFVs, and helicopters, and not main bаttle tanks. Nevertheless, recent commercial satellite imagery reveals that China is manufacturing additional Yuyi-class LCACs at its Jiangnan Shipyard near Shanghai. On October 14, 2020, eight Type 726As that appeared to be nearing completion were observed at the yard.

On September 26, 2020, eight Type 726s were spotted at the Chinese Damiao Naval Base on Nansan Island.
