Embraer’s KC-390 Millennium: Transforming into a USAF-Ready Aircraft with In-Flight Refueling Capabilities

As of this writing, and likely indefinitely thereafter, the United States possesses and will continue to possess the most extensive fleet of military aircraft tankers globally. Approximately 700 aircraft of diverse varieties have previously supplied the U.S. Air Force pilots and aircraft with their services. The military branch is presently engaged in a two-front effort to reduce the number of tankers. One potential strategy is to decrease the quantity of aerial petroleum stations to approximately 450, which remаins a substantial figure nonetheless. Additionally, it is in search of KC-135 Stratotanker and KC-46 Pegasus replacements.

We were previously only aware of one other aircraft in development for this purpose: the Lockheed Martin-Airbus LMXT. This week, however, a new participant entered the fray: the Agile Tanker, which Embraer is constructing in collaboration with L3Harris.

The Agile Tanker, which is derived from the Embraer KC-390 Millennium, is anticipated to benefit from a number of enhancements, including significant modifications to the mission and boom systems. Unannounced are the precise dimensions of the alterations and a possible completion date, but it is assured that the aircraft will emerge as a formidable contender for the attention and financial investment of the USAF.

Since 2015, KC-390 Millennium transport aircraft, a modified variant of the C-390 Millennium, have been undergoing testing. Due to its dual turbofan engines, the aircraft has a maximum speed of 988 kilometers per hour (614 miles per hour). Cargo variants are capable of transporting 26 metric tons of cargo over distances of 1,690 miles (2,720 km) and at altitudes of up to 36,000 feet (11,000 meters).

Similar to the majority of similar apparatus, the aircraft is capable of performing search and rescue operations, humanitarian relief, firefighting, and medical evacuation. The modifications required for aerial tanker operations ought to be executed at the aircraft modification facility of L3Harris in Waco, Texas.
